In 1987, low cover made up 19 per cent of the total area on Finnmarksvidda. The latest results show that the low cover in 2013 is down to a dramatic 4 per cent, managing director Jørn Rolfsen in the Directorate of Agriculture has stated. In 26 years, more than 3/4 of the lichen on the Finnmarksvidda has disappeared due to excessive grazing pressure. This shows that it is now absolutely necessary to have a sharp reduction in the reindeer population soon in order to reverse this trend.
