- set up bird boxes, do not use poison!
Spring and summer are on the way.
At the same time as the amount of insects is reduced, you will have a lot of fun with birdsong throughout the summer.
Are you one of those people who every summer and autumn curse you at all the insects that disturb you in your everyday life?
Poison spray and insect traps are not the solution to the problem.
Let the little birds help you.
Set up bird boxes!
When a couple of small birds need around 300,000 insects to raise a litter of baby birds, it is easy to understand that the more bird boxes, the more garden birds, the more insects these take. You can buy bird boxes at most shopping centers if you don't build one yourself. Birdcage carpentry is a good activity for children and young people.
Different species
Some of the bird species you can expect to find in the boxes are titmouse, blue tit, starling, black-and-white flycatcher, robin and redstart.
Build a bird box
The bird boxes are usually made of wood. The size of the box must match the size of the birds.
For example, a box for starlings should be 14x14x30 cm with an entrance hole of 5 cm diameter. A titmouse would like to have a box of 12x12x25 cm with a hole diameter of 3.2 cm.
This is also the most common size of bird boxes. If you extend the back plank, you can use it when assembling the box.
Assembly
The birds thrive best if the box hangs sheltered from the wind and about
the sun does not shine too brightly on the box. Whether you put it up in a tree or on the house wall does not matter. The boxes should hang at least two to three meters above the ground, preferably a little higher in gardens and parks where there may be a lot of people. If you put it on the house wall, you avoid cats.
